Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO. 39 CONCEALED OIL PLANTS IN THE BRILON-BREDELAR AREA.  Reported by R.A. Acton-Taylor and F.A. Williams.  3 p report.  A visit to the Brilon-Bredelar area in Germany in July 1945, lead to the discovery of four hidden plants in disused quarries.  The description of the plants visited and their processes are discussed.

Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  82 INSPECTION OF HYDROGENATION AND FISCHER-TROPSCH PLANTS IN WESTERN GERMANY DURING SEPTEMBER, 1945.  Reported by T.E. Warren 29 p. report on visits made to the four hydrogenation plants and the six Fischer-Tropsch plants in the British Zone of occupation.  The purpose of the visits was to obtain general information for Canadian government agencies on the German synthetic liquid fuel industry.  Descriptions are also given of the individual plants visited.

INSTITUT FUR BETRIEBSSTOFF FORSCHUNG:  INTERROGATION OF EVACUATED PERSONNEL AT STRASS NEAR NEUBERG, GERMANY.  Reported by:  C. C. Chaffee and others.  40p.  Report on the interrogation of Dr. Phillippovich and other members of the staff of the German Experimental Station for Aeronautic - Institute for Material Research is contained in this report.  The subjects discussed were limited to fuel and lubricant utilization and performance, these are presented under several different headings.

West.  37p.  The information was obtained by inspection of the installation and interrogation of some of the personnel; details of the standing of the latter and their party connections are given.  General details of the plant design and operation are given.  A complete list of incoming outgoing blending components and finished stocks are given.  Appendices included.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  121 WIRTSCHAFTLICHE FORSCHUNGAGESELLSCHAFT m.b.H. (WIFO) HEILIGENSTADT INSTALLATION.  Reported by :  H. F. Jones and others.  11p.  Report is a description of one of a chain of depots built by WIFO to serve the German Army.  The main functions were the blending of gasoline and lubrication oil to the required specifications and the packaging of the finished products.  Brief details regarding the types of blends of gasolines produced and testing methods used at this particular depot are given.

Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  162 MINING AND UTILIZATION OF GERMAN BROWN COAL IN THE COLOGNE AREA.  Reported by N.B. Hutcheon.  75 p. report of information obtained on visits during September 1945 to plants associated with the brown coal industry in the Cologne area of Germany is consolidated briquettes, and electric power production of the various mines and plants visited.  Numerous drawings and diagrams of the equipment used at the mine and plants inspected are included.

Gunther.  8 p. report on a visit to obtain an account of the work and the aims of the subject Institute which was founded in 1943 to provide the research that before the war had been available from foreign sources.  A list of subjects on which work was in progress appended to the report.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  199 TEN YEARS OF OXYGEN-GASIFICATION AT LEUNA.  Reported by O. Sabel.  46 p. report summarizes the experiences and opinions of the leading I.G. expert on the production of gaseous fuels from coke, coal, lignite, etc., by oxygenation.  This report includes several different subjects on the developments of oxygen-gasification.  A list of patents on the subject is given.  Tables, graphs, and a diagram are included, together with a bibliography.

Brookbank and others.  8 p. report made by a team representing the British Ministry of Fuel and Power describes in detail the subject oil filter.  Detailed description of the equipment and of the operation of the filter is given together with drawings.

VOGELPOHL.  (KAISER WILHELM INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN FLOW (OF LUBRICANTS), DIVISION OF FRICTION RESEARCH).    Reported by D.A. Howes.  15 p. report on the Interrogation of Dr. Ing. G. Vogelpohl in Berlin. This report comprised of translations of his written statements, amplified by the result of interrogation.  Due to air raids and lack of assistants little research was done during the war.  However, a list of completed and uncompleted reports is given.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  326 INTERROGATION OF A. BOLLHORN, E. GRAGES AND DR. GROSS OF DEUTSCHE ERDOL A.G., BERLIN.  Reported by D.A. Howes, 32 p. report.  The activities of the ERDOL A.G. company is discussed.  The present activities and its subsidiary companies are listed.  Yearly production and specifications for the various oils are presented in tabular form.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  330 WIRTSCHAFTLICHE FORSCHUNGSGESELLSHAFT m.b.H. (WIFO),  EICKELOH INSTALLATION.  INVESTIGATION OF THE INSTALLATION AND INTERROGATION OF THE PERSONNEL.  Reported by H.F. Jones and H.L. West.  17 p. report.  The installation at Eicheloh, Germany was one of a series of depots operated by WIFO which was concerned with the supply of fuels and lubricants for the German Army and was almost identical with other installations of WIFO.  The activities of this depot were concerned solely with blending gasoline and lubricants.  Information regarding power and other services; management and staff; technical activities, including composition of the various blends, Diesel fuels, oils of various types, and greases; and laboratory test methods are given in considerable detail.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  331 AMALIA BENZOLE REFINERY, HARPENER BERGWERKSVEREIN.  BOCHUM.  Reported by C.A. Murray.  6 p. report of the description of a benzene refinery.  Crude benzene received from coke-oven plants is refined to chemically pure benzene.  Of considerable interest was a still which was set up for continuous rectification.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  332 CHEMISCHE FABRIK WEYL A.G., SANDHOFERSTR, 96-106, MANNHEIM-WALDHOF.  Reported by C.A. Murray.  12 p. report.  This plant was investigated by the British investigators.  The plant distills the coke oven tar produced at the coke-oven plants in the Saar Coal field and at other sources.  The report also describes the equipment and operation of the stills, steam plant and benzol plant.  The production figures of the various products are given as are diagrams of apparatus.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  333 WINKLER GENERATORS FOR MANUFACTURE OF WATER GAS, ETC  Reported by R.J. Morley.  49 p. report.  This report contains information concerning Winkler generators contained in CIOS reports and in documents brought back by CIOS missions to Germany and is collected and combined with literature reference to give a comprehensive account of the history and present status of the process.  This report is illustrated with photographs of equipment together with schematic flow sheets, graphs, tables and bibliography.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  334 DEVELOPMENTS OF GEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING IN GERMANY DURING THE WAR.  Reported by A.O. Rankine.  6 p. report.  The aim of this report was to locate examples of the most recent geophysical instruments and to find and interrogate the inventors, makers and users respecting the design, operation and performance of the said instruments.  No instruments were found which were equal to those in the United States or Great Britian.

Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  373 I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A.G., LUDWIGSHAFEN-GERMANY, FUELS AND LUBRICANTS, JUL-AUG 1945.  Reported by D.A. Howes and W.H. Thomas.  173 p. report.  The conventional hydrogenation process comprising sump phase hydrogenation of bituminous coal, brown, tars, etc., followed by two stage vapor phase hydrogenation of the middle oils, was originally used extensively for the production of 87 O.N. type B4 aviation fuels.  Information of value was obtained on lubricating oils, motor fuels or Diesel Oils.  Diagrams, graphs, charts, and tables present data.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  380 THE BENTHEIM GAS FIELD:  HISTORY AND PRESENT STATUS AS A SOURCE OF NATURAL GAS.  Reported by R.K. Dickie.  20 p. report reviewing the physical data obtained from the officials on the field, the only important field in northwest Germany, and abstracted from the records of the Reichamt fur Bodenforschung at Celle, in an attempt either to assess the actual gas reserves remaining in the structure, or to suggest measures likely to obtain the data necessary for calculating the reserves.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  391 A NEW COKE BREAKER.  Reported by C.H. Noton.  4 p. report covering a visit to the firm of Krupp Treibstoffwerk in Wanne-Eicket to study the new coke breaker.  A diagram illustrates the description of the breaker.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  394 TECHNICAL REPORT ON THE RUHR COALFIELD, BY A MISSION FROM THE MECHANISATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF THE MINISTRY OF FUEL AND POWER:  VOLUME I.  This report examines developments in coal mining technique in the Ruhr coalfield under the following topics:  (1)  coal face equipment  (2)  system of driving roadways into stone  (3)  underground transport  (4)  winding and shaft layout  (5)  surface arrangements.  Several mines were visited, and there are some tables.

Hollings, and others.  75 p. report.  The Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik had developed a process for the gasification of coal with a steam and oxygen under pressure to produce directly gas suitable either for municipal supply or synthetic processes.  This report reviews the published literature on the subject and describes the plant and its operation.  Carbonization and gasification are described in detail.  Flow sheets of the process are given, also included are documents taken from Bohlen and Frankfurt.

Jackson and others.  43 p. report containing information which was obtained by a team from the Fire Research Division of the British Home Office which was visited in the Hamburg district.  Permanent installation for protection of oil storage depots were studied.  Experiments were made with various oil looms and pontoons for restricting spread of oil spilt on water ways.  German standards for air-foam equipment are included, photographs and drawings are included.

Aylwin and others.  22 p. report describes the equipment and process for the dehydration, primary distillation, and the subsequent fractionation and refining of the principal products.  The preparation of coal-tar chemicals is discussed.  Flowsheets for the distillation of tar products and for the production of pure naphthalene are included together with a diagram of the tar still and details of the wrought iron trays.  This firm is the second largest tar distilling organization in Germany.  Several lists and tables are included.

Morcom.  5 p. report.  The process referred to has been described in the German technical literature and in a book entitled "Detoxification of Town's Gas" by F. Schuster, 1935.  Information plant construction and performance, catalyst with removal of carbon dioxide from the final gas, had been operated by I.G. at Nordhausen and by a company in Vienna.

Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1035 METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. AND LURGI BAU, FRANKFURT AM MAIN.  ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF COAL AND OTHER MINERALS.  Reported by Dr. A. Crawford.  66 p. report.  On considering the theory of the separation process the decisive influence of the effective resistance of the particle becomes apparent.  Apparatus was therefore developed which enables it to be determined in various adjustable atmospheres.  The other constants are either measurable or already known.  Calculations then enables the rebounding angle to be determined under various conditions and to establish those conditions most favorable for separation.

Morrison.  31 p. report which covers investigation of German mines and methods used in removing overburden from brown coal deposits and in winning and transporting brown coal in surface workings.  Photographs and one drawing are included.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1093 INVESTIGATION OF THE SHAKER SHOVEL LOADER FOR THE LOADING OF ROCK IN STONE DRIFTS IN THE RUHR DISTRICT OF GERMANY.  Reported by H.R. King and B.J. Quick.  39 p. report.  Ten collieries were visited during this investigation.  The investigating team concluded that at the present stage of development of the Shaker shovel loader that no advantage would be obtained from its introduction to British mining.  Tables, photographs and drawings are included.

Morcom.  21 p. report containing information, which was obtained from Ruhrchemie A.G., on the catalyst, operating conditions and design and performance of plant, and from Ruhrgas A.G. and Benzolverband on the intended system of gas-filling stations and on the advantages secured by the use of methanized gas instead of grid gas or town's gas. 
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1114 TRAVERSING GEAR FOR RAIL WAGONS AT AUGUSTE VICTORIA COLLIERY, HULS.  Reported by E.T. Wilkins.  4 p. report describing an appliance which moved on rails set at right angles to the siding tracks.  Wagons to be traversed were hauled up a ramp onto the platform by an electric winch; the plat form then moved laterally until the wagon could descend the ramp onto the desired track.  Photograph is included.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1117 THE BENZIN-BENZOL VERBAND, BOCHUM AND THE GERMAN BENZOLE INDUSTRY.  Reported by J.A. Beckett and A.K. Steel.  35 p. report describing briefly the production, refining, disposal and marketing of benzene and its homologues.  The Benzin-Benzol Verband (B.V.) organization controlled the production and distribution of benzene in Germany.  A list of members of the B.V. is included in the appendix. 
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1142 THE WINTERSHALL-SCHMALFELDT PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SYNTHESIS GAS AT LUTZKENDORF.  Reported by R.J. Morley.  41 p. report describing the above process, with sketches and flowsheets.  The process consists essentially of gasification of dry brown coal dust in the entrained state.  The plant is very large for the output and capital costs are high.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1158 MINING OF IRON ORE BY UNDERGROUND AND OPENCAST METHODS.  Reported by A.F. Holden and J.H. Taylor.  126 p. report.  The object of the mission was to inspect the various methods of mining carried out in the ore mines with particular reference to the mode of working and the type of machinery used.  The mines and quarries working iron ore were visited.  Details of the Brown Coal Workings, Cologne, are given.  Appendices present individual reports on several different mines.  Photomicrographs of German iron ores, maps, geological sections, graphs, flow sheets, diagrammatic drawing of machinery, etc., accompany the report.

Withers.  33 p. report which gives the answers to a standard questionnaire and details of the organization of the Versuchs Anstalt, a central organization dealing with the investigation of all technical problems of the German Navy.  A list of samples collected from Naval sources in the area is given.  "It is not considered that the persons interviewed were very knowledgeable on the subjects discussed."

Price Walters.  27 p. report.  Report includes diagrams, photographs, tables, a graph, table of contents and a list of firms and personnel visited.  Discussed are several different methods of bottling liquid gas, manufacture of butane and propane, which constitute the raw material of the industry.  The methods of distribution and the present condition of the industry in Germany.
Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1439 INVESTIGATION OF THE SLINGING STOWING MACHINE IN COAL MINES IN THE RUHR DISTRICT OF GERMANY.  Reported by H.R. King and B.J. Quick.  14 p. report.  Development of a mechanical device for stowing was commenced about 1931, as it was realized that while pneumatic stowing is effective, the power consumption, using this method, is very high.  Furthermore, where stowing has to be completed on one shift the length of face is limited by the capacity of the machine used.  This factor has been taken into account in the design of the slinging stower which has a peak capacity of 105 cubic yards per hour, compared with the largest type Brieden pneumatic machine with a capacity of 90 cubic yards per hour.

Tingle.  69 p. report which gives an outline of fundamental work on friction and lubrication carried out in Germany during the war years, 1939-45.  It is based on reports and publications and on discussions with some of the scientific workers in this field.

Item No. 30 BIOS REPORT NO.  1698 GERMAN DOMESTIC SOLID FUEL APPLIANCES.  NOV. 1946.  Reported by E.A.C.  Chamberlain and H.S. Hughes.  65 p. report.  20 plants were visited.  This report consists of information on:  cookers, heating stoves, solid fuel water heaters and fuels used.  The appliance design is not as far advanced as U.S. but taken as a whole, appliances are not less efficient than those in common use in Great Britain.  One advantage, is the almost universal use of brown coal briquettes in Germany.  A list of the literature and appliances requistioned is included.
