To secure uniform temperature the catalyst is mixed with a conducting material and heated electrically; for example, for NH₃ synthesis silica, asbestos, magnesia, or alumina is added to the Fe catalyst; for alcohols and acids from CO and H₂, Cu, Ag, Al, coal, coke, or graphite is added to the ZnO-Cr₂O₃ catalyst.
