Abstract

A method is suggested to produce saturated aliphatic aldehydes by condensation of lower aldehydes in the presence of catalytic amount of slightly soluble cobalt salt, for example, cobalt naphthenate, cobalt stearate, followed by hydrogenation of the obtained unsaturated aldehydes and separation of the target products by the known methods. To simplify the process and increase the target products yield, the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of the same slightly soluble salt of cobalt under increased pressure of synthesis gas (CO:H2 = 1:1) and under heating. The hydrogenation is performed at a pressure of 100-300 atmospheres, predominantly at 150-250 atmospheres, and a temperature of 100-180°C.
