Abstract PURPOSE: To prepare a >= 2 C hydrocarbon, especially 5-20 C hydrocarbon, in high yield, by contacting synthesis gas with a catalyst obtained by supporting Ru to a carrier containing manganese oxide. CONSTITUTION: A >= 2 C hydrocarbon is prepared by the catalytic reaction of synthesis gas, especially mixture of CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst obtained by supporting Ru to a carrier containing manganese oxide, at 150-450oC and 5-200 kg/cm2 pressure at a GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) of 100-10,000 synthesis gas volume under standard temperature and pressure per unit volume of catalyst per hour. The carrier containing manganese oxide is a commercially available manganese oxide powder, its reduced product, a manganese compound obtained by gelatinizing an aqueous solution containing manganese nitrate with an alkali such as ammonia water, the calcined product of said manganese compound, etc. The carrier is immersed in an aqueous solution containing a ruthenium compound such as ruthenium chloride, etc. to support Ru to the carrier. The amount of Ru supported to the carrier is 0.1-2 wt% in terms of Ru metal.
