ABSTRACT:

This paper addresses the XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) iron phases which occur on the surfaces of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Results obtained for single-phase metal, oxide, and carbide samples are presented.  Methods for estimating the extent of carbide formation during low conversion synthesis, and the extent of catalyst oxidation at high conversions are also illustrated. 15 refs., 5 figs.
