Exhausted catalysts in the hydrogenation of CO are regenerated by treatment with H₂ or H₂-containing gases in the synthesis furnace at approximately synthesis temperature.  The temperature of the H₂ is regulated by mixing with it the exothermic reacting material, such as the C oxides, on the catalyst.
