Hydrocarbons are obtained by hydrogenating CO in the presence of Fe catalysts and pressures of 5-25 atm., using gases that contain more H₂ than corresponds to the ratio CO:H₂=1.8:1, the operation being carried in more than 1 step with gas recycle.
