For synthesis of MeOH from C oxides and H2 at elevated temperature and pressure, there are employed catalysts comprising 1 or more difficultly reducible metal oxides to which a metal halide is added. The metal oxides are preferably those of the 2d periodic group and an oxide of a metal of groups 3 and 7 is added as a promoter. Among the catalysts that may be used are: Oxides of Zn and Cr with Zn or B chloride, oxides of Zn and Mn or B and MgCl2. Various details of preparing the catalysts are given.
