Process for the preparation of an aliphatic organic ester at elevated temperatures and pressures comprises treating an aliphatic organic ether with CO in the presence of active C and HCl, HBr, HF, HI, NH₄Cl, NH₄Br, NH₄Br, NH₄I, chloramines, EtCl, MeBr, sulfuryl chloride, B fluoride or phosphoryl chloride as the catalyst.
