Preparation of acids such as propoinic, butyric, or valeric acid from steam, CO and an olefinic hydrocarbon such as C₂H₄, C₃H₆, or C₄H₈ is effected by reaction in the presence of a volatile inorganic acid, such as HCl, formed in situ from Cl in the preseance of activated charcoal.
