Continuously replenished bed of finely granular fuel is treated from below with a gasifying agent, for example O₂ in such a manner that the bed is kept in constant motion, resembling the motion of a boiling liquid. This movement is facilitated by introducing into the bed, from the side or from below, a separate stream of a fuel gas, preferably gas produced in the process. Describes apparatus.
