Reaction between C oxides and gases containing H₂ is effected in the presence of catalysts containing a metal of group 8 of the periodic system, such as Fe and Co, together with a quantity of an alkali metal equivalent to less than about 0.6 part by weight of alkali calculated as alkali metal per 100 parts by weight of the group 8 metal.
