Gaseous hydrocarbons or gas mixtures containing them are partly oxidized or electrically treated to form, in part, unsaturated hydrocarbons; these may be removed and the remaining gas made to react with H₂O vapor or O₂ or both to form mixtures of CO and H₂ for synthesis of MeOH and higher alcohols, or the CO may be oxidized to CO₂ and removed, leaving only H₂.
