Hydrocarbon gases, such as purified coal gas, are led with steam or CO₂, with or without air or O₂, over an activated catalyst in long narrow tubes which are heated externally to 600°-800° and made of resistant steel, for example, Cr-Ni steel, or of Cr-Ni alloy. The catalyst may be Ni activated with Al₂O₃ or MgO. The process may be effected in 2 stages.
