Water gas and like mixtures of CO and H₂ to be used for the manufacture of MeOH by catalytic reaction at a high temperature and pressure are preliminarily purified by treatment with steam in the presence of a catalyst promoting the production of H₂ and C₂ from CO and H₂O. This treatment decomposes organic S compounds in the gas mixture and yields H₂S, which is removed with the CO_2. Gives example. Addition to German patent 396,115 (abs. 113).
