Gases such as blue water gas which contain CO, H₂, and S compounds are subjected to the action of a catalyst comprising Ni on a material largely composed of MgO at a temperature at 230°-760°. CH₄ is thus formed and the MgO is converted to MgCO₃, and sulfide, which are then dissociated by heat to regenerate MgO.
