To produce a desired H₂:CO ratio and at the same time prevent C formation, hydrocarbon gases are passed with steam and CO₂ in amounts corresponding to an excess of O₂ at temperatures of about 900°-1,700° F. through an extended catalyst zone, the great part of the CO₂ requirement being supplied to those portions of the catalyst zone having a temperature substantially > 1,175° F.
