To produce a desired H2:CO ratio and at the same time prevent C formation, hydrocarbon gases are passed with steam and CO2 in amounts corresponding to an excess of O2 at temperatures of about 900°-1,700° F. through an extended catalyst zone, the great part of the CO2 requirement being supplied to those portions of the catalyst zone having a temperature substantially > 1,175° F.
