Olefinic hydrocarbon fractions, comprising at most 2-3 consecutive C numbers, obtained from the primary, cracked, or dehydrogenated products of the catalytic hydrogenation of CO, are converted by gases containing CO and H₂ into alcohols. From these is separated the fraction passing over closely below the high-boiling compounds (heavy oil) and converted by means of alkali fusion into soaps.
