Fuel gas free from tar and hydrocarbons is obtained by gasifying bituminous fuel and passing the gas, without intermediate cooling, through a heated chamber containing a catalyst known to promote the conversion of tar vapors and hydrocarbons into CO and H₂. An oxidizing agent, for example, O₂, CO₂, or steam, may be fed to the chambers, if necessary. Describes apparatus.
