Fe carbonyl is precipitated to the amount of 0.2-10 wt. % upon an active support, such as Zn-aluminate, which has been treated with a small quantity of an alkaline activating agent.  The carbonate of a metal of group 2 is used as the support.  The catalyst will contain 0-7% of K2CO2.
