Mixture of H₂ with CO or CO₂ is passed through an electrical field under a reduced pressure not exceeding 0.15-0.3 milliamps per cm.² of reaction tube cross section.  Higher yields are obtained if an absorbent for CH₂O, for example, active C, is mounted between the electrodes.  Describes apparatus.
