Water-gas generation system is operated in 2 or more states.  The coke is withdrawn from the 1^st stage for use in catalytic or adsorption processes.  The distribution of load between the 2 stages is such that the coke withdrawn from the 1^st stage has a surface area of at least 500 m. ³ per gm.  The balance of the coke is then sent to a subsequent water-gas generation stage or stages and used for production of water gas or synthesis gas.  In this combination process, the catalyst regeneration is entirely eliminated.  1 literature ref. and 6 United States patents cited.
