In a process for hydrogenating CO on Fe catalysts with synthesis gases containing 0.8-2.5 parts H₂ to 1 part of CO, the contact time of the synthesis gas with the Fe catalyst is restricted, in fact to 1/3-1/15 of the normal contact time.
