Hydrocarbons and oxygenated organic compounds are produced by contacting carbonaceous solids with an oxidizing gas containing steam so as to generate a gas mixture containing CO and passing this mixture to a synthesis zone.  Gas generation and synthesis steps are conducted at approximately the same temperature.
