PATENT

3497. ----- [STANDARD OIL CO.]  Gasification of Carbonaceous Solids.  British Patent 668,941, 1952.  Fuel Abs., 1952, abs., 4758.

Gas mixtures containing CO and H2 are made by passing a gas mixture containing steam and O2 through a mass of finely divided carbonaceaus material maintained in a gasification zone at an elevated temperature and in the form of a dense turbulent fluidized bed having a well-defined upper level.  There is incorporated in the mass a halide-yielding elemental halogen and/or volatile halogen compounds under the prevailing reaction conditions in an amount sufficient to inhibit formation of CO2 in favor of CO formation.
