Describes an improved process for controlling the temperature and maintaining a high concentration of the catalyst in the conversion of olefins to oxygenated compounds by means of CO and H₂ with Fe and Co compounds as catalysts, by recirculating the product of the 1^st stage of the reaction after cooling and removing the gases, thus providing a high concentration of catalyst at the reactor inlet so that the Oxo reaction proceeds throughout the length of the reactor.  3-7 vol. of the initial product are used per vol. of fresh olefin.
