Hydrocarbons of the type of motor fuels or for mixing with motor fuels are made by hydrogenating C oxides in the presence of a catalyst, the reaction gases being diluted with enough inert gas so that the partial pressure of the C oxide and H₂ together is <5 atm. The reaction is regulated by regulating the proportion of reacting and inert gases.
