Higher alcohols occurring in the hydrogenation of CO at high pressure are recovered from the crude oil mixture by extraction.  Bases such as NaOH or K₂CO₃ or salts such as NaCl or Na acetate are added to lower the solubility of alcohols in H₂O.  Pentane, isopentane, hexane, or propane can be used as solvents.
