An apparatus for NH₃ synthesis or other catalytic reactions at high temperature and pressure, arranged for absorption of heat of reaction by fresh reaction gases, is constructed for circulation, between the container for the catalyst and the outer pressure-resisting wall, of a gas which maintains the temperature of the wall within safe limits and is discharged to the outside of the pressure tube.
