Reacting gases are circulated over 2 or more distinct groups of surfaces enclosing the catalytic material, and the transfer of heat is regulated by varying the proportions of the gases that circulate over the different surfaces.  The apparatus may be used with H₂ and N₂ containing varying quantities of CO for NH₃ synthesis.
