A mixture of C₂H₂, H₂, and CO is prepared by submitting gaseous hydrocarbons such as CH₄, to the action of an electric are with the addition of a compound yielding O such as CO₂ or steam. The proportions may be chosen so that the H₂ and CO are in the right proportions for the synthesis of MeOH.
