Aliphatic O compounds are prepared by the action of CO and H2O in the presence of catalysts composed of a mixture of rare earths associated with at least 1 element of each of the 2 following series: (a) K, Na, Li, Be, Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr,  (b) Cu, Mg,  Zn, Cd, Pb, V, Cr, Mo, Sb, Bi, B, Al, W, Si, Ti, Zr, Th.  Gives an example of the preparation of a mixture of lower fatty acids and their esters.
