CO-H₂ mixture suitable for chemical synthesis is secured by gasification of high-volatile coal in 1 producer, using a mixture of O₂ and steam, and by cracking the hydrocarbons in this gas and reducing the CO₂ to CO by passing the gas from the 1^st producer down through the fuel bed in a 2d producer.  The cracked gases are cooled by the ash bed in the 2d producer.  The bed then serves for superheating steam and O₂ when the flow through the producers is reversed.  Coal is fed to the top of the producer that is on the gas making cycle.
