Catalyst for production of MeOH, higher alcohols, and other O-containing organic compounds from C oxides and H₂ at elevated temperatures and pressures comprises a basic Zn chromate of the formula 4ZnO·CrO₃.  This catalyst enables a temperature of 300°-400° to be employed for the synthesis and is not poisoned by S.  Volatile compounds of Fe, Ni, and Co should be excluded.
