3328.   ------.  [SENSEL, E. E., AND BECK, R. A.]  (The Texas Co.).  Catalysts for Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  United States Patent 2,517,035, Aug. 1, 1950; appl. filed Mar. 28, 1947.  Serial No. 737,996; 2 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).  Chem. Abs., vol. 44, 1950, p. 9658.

Lanthanum oxide is a highly active promoter in catalyst for CO conversion, particularly precipitated supported Co catalyst.  It may be used with or without conventional promoters such as thoria or magnesia.  A suggested composition in wt. % is 32 Co:64 calcined diatomaceous earth:3 magnesia and 1 lanthanum oxide.  Fused Fe catalyst may also be promoted with lanthanum oxide.  An example shows the lanthanum promoted Co catalyst to be 23% more effective for CO conversion to liquid hydrocarbon compounds than the thoria promoted catalyst.  6 United States patents cited.
