CO or CO₂ mixed with a greater volume of H₂ is brought into contact with a catalyst at 200° and a pressure at least of 30 atm.  The catalyst contains Cu and 1 or more of the elements Ti, V, Cr, Mn, or B but is free from Fe or Ni.
