In the production of water gas or gas for the synthesis of benzine by the gasification of pulverulent fuel injected through inlets into a gasifier by means of circulating gases containing steam heated in regenerators and supplied to the gasifier through inlets below the aforesaid inlets, a superpressure is created between the regenerators and the gasifier by a reduction in the cross section of the gas inlets, so as to prevent or reduce the flow of gas between the reaction chamber and the heated regenerator.
