PATENT

3269. ----- [SCHILLER, J. C.]  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  FerroFerric Oxide-Alkali Metal Trioxalate Ferriate Catalyst and Process of Preparation.  United States Patent 2,465279, Mar. 22, 1949; original appl. filed Dec. 20, 1946, Serial No. 717,578; divided and this appl. filed June 1, 1948, Serial No. 30,497; 10 claims (Cl. 252-474).  Chem. Abs., vol. 43, 1949, p. 4448.

Catalysts contain 80-99.8% Fe oxide and 0.2-20% alkali metal trioxalatoferrate  (III) and are suitable for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2.  For example, Fe2(SO4)3 25 parts and BaC2O4H2O 50 parts in H2O 600 parts are warmed several hr., filtered and the filtrate evaporated to yield K3Fe(C2O4)33H2O(I).  A thoroughly mixed slurry of  (I) 5% and Fe3O4 95% is dried at 100°, pulverized, pelleted, heated 4.5 hr. at 1,000° F. in an O2-containing atm., and reduced 24hr. at 700° F. in a current of 1,000 vol. H2 per vol. catalyst per hr.  (I) may also be prepared by mixing aqueous solutions containing Fe2(SO4)3 20 parts and K2C2O4 100 parts, respectively.
