Valuable washing, wetting and dispersing agents can be produced by sulfonation of aldehydes and aldehyde mixtures formed by the action of water gas on olefinic hydrocarbon mixtures of the CO hydrogenation. The aldehydes or their mixtures must be subjected beforehand to a condensation by means of alkaline or other condensing agents accompanied by complete or partial splitting off of H₂O.
