In the catalytic transformation of mixtures of CO and H₂, the support for the catalyst used contains no soluble constituents, or the soluble constituents are extracted by solution  or rendered insoluble.  Suitable supports difficultly soluble in acids include BaSO₄, carborundum, Cr₂O₃, Al₂O₃, and silicates such as steatite and refractory earth.  Mg carbonates may be used as a support insoluble in alkalies.
