Co catalysts that are precipitated on kieselguhr and have been used for the synthesis of benzines from CO and H₂ are regenerated by solution in HNO₃ and reprecipitation of the catalytically active material, the acid containing not more than 20% and preferably no more than 3-5% of free HNO₃.  The catalysts are treated above the melting point of the solid paraffins contained in the catalyst, such as, at 70°-90°, the kieselguhr being readily separated by filtration, and the paraffins separating as an oily layer.
