In producing high-boiling, viscous products by the polymerization of low-boiling, liquid hydrocarbons of the olefin series or mixtures of liquid hydrocarbons containing these, preferably with the addition of gaseous olefins or gas mixtures containing them in the presence of Al chloride, the polymerization is carried out with the addition of halogens such as Cl. Data are presented concerning the process and the product obtained by the polymerization of a cracked distillate, obtained by the vapor-phase cracking of the paraffin gatsch from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, in the presence of 4% of AlCl₃as catalyst at 25° with varying amounts of halogens.
