Process for producing catalyst suitable for effecting benezine synthesis from oxides of C and H₂ characterized by the use of MgCO₃ as carrier mass.  The Mg compounds employed as carrier material are dissolved out from the spent catalyst mass by treatment with H₂O and CO₂, whereupon the Mg solution separated from the insoluble residue is relieved of part of the CO₂ by boiling or by the blowing in of steam and the Mg is precipitated as basic carbonate.
