Synthetic lubricants obtained by the polymerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons are stabilized against oxidation by treating them as before at 170°-180° with small amounts of fresh AlCl₃and then adding to them an oxidation inhibitor such as b-thionaphthol or b-naphthalamine. Instead of treating with AlCl₃ active bleaching earth can be used for 3 hr. at 160°.
