            In converting straight-chained hydrocarbons with 6-12 C atoms in the molecule, such as those occurring in the reduction of CO by H₂ at low temperatures, into atomic hydrocarbons at raised temperatures and under normal or slightly increased pressures, a suitable catalyst therefore consists of calcined magnesite as the carrier substance and Cr oxide as the activator, the amount of Cr oxide being >10%, preferably 30-50%.  In forming the catalyst the carrier material may be impregnated in a vacuum with a liquid containing a Cr compound, preferably a solution of ammonium chromate or chromic acid.
