Commercial magnesia is purified of its lime and made suitable for the preparation of the Co-MgO-ThO2- kieselguhr catalyst by washing in the mother liquor remaining from a previous catalyst preparation.  The treatment is continued until the magnesia present is converted and removed as the bicarbonate.  likewise the small % of Co present in the mother liquor as bicarbonate is precipitated and recovered as  metallic Co.
