In producing hydrocarbons by the catalytic reaction of CO and H₂ in the presence of Co catalysts, use is made of catalysts containing no other catalytic metal than Co, the catalysts being activated only through the addition of ThO₂ and MgO.  A suitable catalyst is found to consist of 100 parts Co. 5 ThO₂, and 5 MgO.
