            Octane number of olefinic hydrocarbons, such as cracked or synthetic gasoline, is improved by treatment at 150°--400° with activated fuller’s earth or silica gel.  Especially suitable are earths that have been activated with HC1 or H2SO as “Granosil” or “Tonsil”, or those to which AlCl3, BCl3, FeCl2,  H3PO4 have been added.  As the activity of the earths decrease in operation, the temperature is raised.
