Very effective catalysts of Co and Mg are produced by precipitating simultaneously or successively the Mg and Co contained in a solution of their nitrates or chlorides while using a Mg solution having a larger content of Mg than that corresponding to the stoichiometric ratio of Mg to Co in the catalyst to be produced.
