Polybasic carboxylic acids are obtained from carboxylic acids containing olefinic double bonds, with use of suitable hydrogenation catalysts, by converting at elevated pressure and temperature gas mixtures containing CO and H₂ and by oxidizing the aldehyde-, keto, or alcohol-carboxylic acids produced thereby.
